Josef Carl Maria Deitmer (born August 12, 1865 in Münster ; † January 16, 1929 in Berlin ) was a German Catholic theologian , the last prince-bishop delegate to Saint Hedwig and Breslau auxiliary bishop based in Berlin.

Life

Coming from Münsterland , Josef Deitmer studied theology in Innsbruck and Münster . In Münster he was an active member of the Catholic student association KStV Germania in the KV . On December 17, 1887, he was ordained a priest in the diocese of Münster . He then worked as a chaplain, initially in Kevelaer , and from October 1892 in Sankt Matthias in Berlin-Schöneberg . From August 10, 1893, he was the first pastor and curate in Berlin-Steglitz . A short time later, on June 20, 1894, the Steglitz Curate was elevated to an independent parish. In 1899/1900 Deitmer managed the construction of the Rosary Church as the client .

In the following years, Deitmer divided the parish area, which was growing in number of members, into the communities of the Holy Family (their church in Groß-Lichterfelde near Berlin was consecrated in 1904 ), Sacred Heart of Jesus in Berlin-Zehlendorf (1908) and St. Mary's in Berlin-Friedenau (1914) .

Josef Deitmer (1925)

On August 15, 1920 Deitmer became the prince-bishop's delegate for Brandenburg and Pomerania and provost to Sankt Hedwig in Berlin . On February 19, 1923 he was by Pope Pius XI. appointed auxiliary bishop in Breslau as titular bishop of Sora , based in Berlin. On May 1, 1923 , Prince-Bishop Adolf Cardinal Bertram consecrated him , which at the time was viewed by the public as an indication of the impending establishment of an independent Berlin diocese. However, many parts of the clergy saw it as a strengthening of the position of the diocese of Breslau. Soon after Deitmer's death, on August 13, 1930, in the course of the elevation of the diocese of Breslau to the archbishopric, the prince-bishop's delegation for Brandenburg and Pomerania as the diocese of Berlin was raised to its suffragan .

Auxiliary Bishop Josef Deitmer's grave is located next to the first three Berlin bishops in their lower church after the reconstruction of the St. Hedwig's Cathedral, which was destroyed in the war.

He is remembered at the listed St. Hedwig cemetery on Konrad-Wolf-Straße in the Lichtenberg district, Berlin-Alt-Hohenschönhausen district . On a simply designed memorial with the inscription The eternal light shine for them. All deceased members of the St. Hedwigs parish are noted for the deceased Brandenburgers right next to the cemetery chapel. Among them is Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Deitmer † January 16, 1929 at an exposed point .

Act

The Diocesan History Association in Berlin goes back to a joint founding of Pastor Carl Sonnenschein , the historian Karl Heinrich Schäfer and Josef Deitmer in 1928. This association aims to arouse interest in local church history and to contribute to scientific research.

Deitmer consecrated several churches in Berlin, including Sankt Michael in Berlin-Wannsee on June 12, 1927 and Sankt Augustinus in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg on September 16, 1928. As early as 1912 he was at the first Eucharist in the Mater Dolorosa church in Berlin-Lankwitz present, whose foundation stone he had laid a year earlier. On November 11, 1928, Deitmer was also able to lay the foundation stone for the church building of the Holy Family congregation in Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg, which was finally consecrated in 1930 by the first bishop of the Berlin diocese , Christian Schreiber .

Deitmer was very committed to the youth. With Bernhard Lichtenberg he agreed that Berlin urgently needs a Catholic high school. At Deitmer's suggestion, suitable land in Berlin-Charlottenburg was made available to the Fathers of the Society of Jesus , who founded the Canisius College there in 1925 (today in Berlin-Tiergarten ).
