St. Katharina (Düsseldorf-Gerresheim)
The Church of St. Katharina in Düsseldorf-Gerresheim was built by the architect Heinrich Böll between 1964 and 1966.
As early as 1903 the construction of a parish church for the workers in the south of Gerresheim was ordered. The church built afterwards was soon too small. When it was in need of renovation in 1955, it was decided to build a larger new building.
The floor plan of the church is parabolic , which, according to the architect's idea, should be reminiscent of a ship. The windows are rectangular. The roof is a gable roof. The ridge meets the apex of the parabola. The bell tower stands as a campanile a little apart from the church. Its floor plan is rectangular and it also has a gable roof. The nave and bell tower are both built of red brick.
