The St. Katharinen- und Weißfrauenstift is a foundation under public law in Frankfurt am Main . It has its roots in two medieval women's monasteries, the white women's monastery founded in 1228 and the Katharinenkloster founded by Wicker Frosch in 1354 . After the Reformation was introduced in the imperial city of Frankfurt, the city council secularized the two monasteries and converted them into secular supply facilities for single, needy women of the Lutheran creed.

After the end of the Free City of Frankfurt in 1866 and the annexation by Prussia, the magistrate reorganized the city's welfare organizations . In 1877 the two former monasteries, which had been under joint management since 1820, were merged and converted into a foundation under public law. The board of directors of the foundation is formed by the nursing office , whose senior is always the respective municipal social department head, according to the statutes.

According to the statutes, the purpose of the foundation today is "to provide direct support and care for single women in need", in particular by granting annual pensions and providing accommodation. As a rule, the nuns should be of Christian faith and have been living in Frankfurt am Main for at least one year. The foundation operates several residential complexes for the elderly and a care service.

The St. Katharinen- und Weißfrauenstift is one of the six large “public charitable foundations” in the city of Frankfurt, together with the General Alms Box , the Hospital for the Holy Spirit , the Foundation for the Deaf and Dumb, the Wiesenhüttenstift and the Orphanage Foundation. It is based in the courtyard of the Rebstock in Braubachstrasse .
