The Holy Spirit Hospital is the oldest hospital for the sick in Frankfurt am Main. Its earliest surviving mention comes from the year 1267. The Gothic hospital hall with the hospital church of the Holy Spirit , which has been used by the hospital since 1315, was located on Saalgasse behind the city wall , which had protected access from the bank of the Main to the city since the early 13th century. At that time the house was financed by donations from wealthy citizens. Initially, only the needy and destitute were cared for, and they often stayed in the house after their recovery.

Modern times

In the 17th century the house already had 60 beds for nursing. Up to the 16th century wealthy Frankfurt citizens were also accepted, after that only servants and strangers, while the citizens had to be cared for at home. In the 18th century, Johann Christian Senckenberg therefore donated the Bürgerhospital in order to enable this group of people to receive nursing outside the home.

The foundation stone for the new construction of the hospital on Langen Strasse according to plans by Friedrich Rumpf was laid in 1835. After its construction, the historic building that was located directly on the Main, including the Hospital Church, was torn down in 1840. The new hospital is said to have been one of the most modern in Germany at the time.

In both world wars, the wounded were treated in the hospital. During the Second World War , the hospital was badly damaged in the air raids on Frankfurt am Main on March 18, 1944, and after the war it was rebuilt in a simplified form on the historical floor plan . Regular operations resumed in 1950.
