St. Kilian (desert)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The desert is 30 m to the left of the villa at Mainberger Straße 2

St. Kilian is a medieval church in Schweinfurt . It is also referred to as Kilian's Church I in the city's history .

Terminology

The deserted church is known as Kilian's Church I, as there is the late medieval church of the same name, St. Kilian am Zeughaus (Kilian's Church II), about 1 km to the west . In addition, about 1 km further west is today's St. Kilian 's Church (Kilian 's Church III). Strictly speaking, the latter is already the fourth Kilian's Church, as the previous building on the same site was badly damaged during the war and a modern church was built there from 1952. However, Kilian's Church III refers to the old and the new building.

location

The desert is located in the northeastern part of the city , which is also called Kiliansberg because of the deserted churches . The desert is located on the current villa plots Am Kiliansberg (No. 4 and 4 b) and Am Löhlein (No. 2 b).

history

St. Kilian was the parish church of the old town , which was abandoned in the 16th century and fell into disrepair (see: Schweinfurt, early Middle Ages ). The age of the parish is indefinite. The church was on the northwest edge of the Old Town village , with a cemetery where row graves were found. Because cemeteries at that time, as also often in today's villages, were not created within the settlement. Kilian's Church was named after the Iroschottische missionary Kilian , who came to Franconia in the 7th century . There are contradicting information about the detailed history of Kilian's Church and the period of its existence.

Viticulture was practiced on the Kiliansberg on a large scale until the 19th century, and it was not until the end of the century that the Kiliansberg was rebuilt, mainly with villas from Schweinfurt entrepreneurs.

A political dispute broke out in 2016 about a construction project on a villa plot in the area of the former Kilian's Church, including the question of whether the foundations of the church were still in place. A public park with information boards on the property was suggested.

description
