history

The old Kilian's Church

The old Kilian's Church, named after the Catholic Saint Kilian , has been at the same location since 1927 . On July 23, 1926 the foundation stone was laid for the new daughter church of the Holy Spirit Church , which was consecrated on November 13, 1927. Architect Peter Krammer from Schweinfurt created a neo-baroque hall church with a high onion dome that can be seen from afar and which has become a symbol of the city. The fresco on the wall of the choir was created by Martin Amorbach , a relief of the Holy Trinity and figures by sculptor Heinrich Söller from Schweinfurt, the altar cross by Balthasar Schmitt , stucco decorations and pulpit by Karl Killer and the painter of the Cross, Hans Schellinger , the last three all from Munich.

Destruction of the old church and reconstruction

This was very badly damaged in World War II . The tower was essentially preserved, the nave was bombed out and the southern outer wall was completely destroyed. The US troops marched into Schweinfurt on April 11, 1945. One day later, American President Franklin D. Roosevelt died and the Americans held a memorial service on that day at the church ruins. Shortly after the war, a provisional theater hall was set up in the vestibule of the ruin, as the actual theater hall of the city had been destroyed.

In 1952, the Würzburg cathedral master builder Hans Skull began to rebuild the church, using the existing surrounding walls, mainly from the tower. Bishop Julius Döpfner inaugurated the new church on September 20, 1953 .

Conversion of the choir to a youth church

Since 2008, a youth church project group has met regularly in Schweinfurt, whose services have usually already taken place in the Church of St. Kilian. When in 2014 the church youth work (kja) moved into new rooms and offices right next to the church, the youth church was given the name "kross". A reconstruction of the choir was within reach, but it took until the first construction work until 2017. At Pentecost 2018, the room equipped with new technology, new seating and a new altar was finally handed over to its intended use and has been used since then under the name " krosskirche "as a church service room for" kross - Junge Kirche Schweinfurt ". Responsible for this are the BDKJ in the city and district of Schweinfurt as well as the church youth work of the diocese of Würzburg .

description

The church was rebuilt in the form of a hall church, as a large, flat-roofed building with a trapezoidal floor plan. The choir faces east. The church tower is still located on the north side , with the outer walls of the previous building. It also has a flat roof. An archway is added to the south side of the nave . The organ gallery is located on the west side above the main portals. A large crucifix hangs over the popular altar . A high altar is completely missing. The side altars are replaced by stone reliefs , as well as on the north wall of the nave, which in turn were executed by Heinrich Söller. The 250 m 2 choir window with the motif of the pouring out of the Holy Spirit is the work of Professor Georg Meistermann and one of the largest church windows in Germany. The church contains a gilded figure of Our Lady in the nave .

Peal

The bells of the neo-baroque Kilian's Church, a “Salve Regina” motif, are still there. It was cast by the Klaus brothers' bell and metal foundry in Heidingsfeld .
