Holy Spirit Church (Schweinfurt)
The Holy Spirit Church is the Roman Catholic parish church of the city of Schweinfurt . The neo-Romanesque basilica was built from 1897 to 1902 according to plans by Anton Leipold .
history
Hospital Church
The imperial city of Schweinfurt had been Lutheran since the Reformation . A Catholic community was only able to re-establish itself in the Napoleonic period . In 1803 the royal Bavarian government assigned the Gothic hospital church to the Holy Spirit as a parish church. This was founded in 1338 and rebuilt in 1554 after being destroyed in the Second Margrave War .
For the refurbishment after 1803, the Catholic community acquired works of art from secularized monastery churches in the region.
Holy Spirit Church
In the second half of the 19th century, industrialization and influx of people let the community grow strongly. After long planning and site inspections, it was decided to demolish the old hospital church and build a large new building at the old location with the historical name. Work began in 1897. On March 2, 1902, the church was consecrated . At that time, there were only four floors of the bell tower. It was not until 1911 that, according to plans by Jakob Angermair , another three storeys were added to its current height of 56 m.
The Holy Spirit Church survived the Second World War undamaged. In the decades that followed, numerous daughter parishes emerged in the parish area. A historicism- critical interior renovation from 1959 to 1961 was later partially reversed. In 1974 the chancel was redesigned according to the requirements of the liturgical reform.
architecture
The Holy Spirit Church is a replica of a Romanesque cathedral . It is a three-aisled basilica on a cross plan. Choir and transept arms close with round apses . There is an octagon above the crossing . The show facade in the southeast is designed in the manner of a western bar , in the middle of which the bell tower with a tent roof and a crowning statue of the Virgin Mary rises. Its three upper floors show their later, simplified development. The rest of the building is richly structured with arched windows , arched friezes , blind columns and pilasters . The tympana of the three portals show biblical characters and scenes related to the patronage of the church. They are works by Georg Wrba .
The crossing tower and partly also the choir of the Holy Spirit Church are replicas of the Cathedral of San Vigilio in Trento .
The central nave of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche is based on the Speyer Cathedral , whose tower above the west facade is also very similar to the crossing tower of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche.
Furnishing
The furnishings , including the crucifixus above the altar by Heinrich Söller , mostly date from the 1960s and 1970s. The main apse was brought back to its original state during the last renovation. To the right and left of the central axis with the tabernacle and a sculpture of the blessing Christ are figures from the Old and New Testaments and from church history.
The church has two organs from the Steinmeyer company (Oettingen). The main organ with 46 registers on three manuals and a pedal was built in 1967. The console of the main organ has four manuals. The choir organ can be played from the 4th manual. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
