Erich Schneider (art historian)

Erich Schneider (born November 8, 1954 in Kitzingen ) is a German art historian and museologist . Since 2016 he has been director of the Museum für Franken in Würzburg .

Life

After completing high school and military service, Erich Schneider studied art history, prehistory and historical auxiliary sciences from 1975 to 1982, primarily with Professors Erich Hubala , Günther Haseloff and Peter Herde at the University of Würzburg . In December 1982 he completed his dissertation on "The baroque Benedictine Abbey Church of Münsterschwarzach " with magna cum laude. Since 1984 he has worked as a lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt and at the Universities of Bamberg , Saarbrücken and Würzburg in art history and museology.

In July 1981 he started working as a research assistant at the Schweinfurt Municipal Collections . From 1990 to 2015 he was the director of the museums and galleries in Schweinfurt, where his work is reflected in the 215 catalogs and publications of the "Schweinfurt Museum Writings" series that he edited. From 1991 Schneider was also given the management of the cultural office of the city of Schweinfurt. In this function he was significantly involved in the late summer of Schweinfurt since 2000 and was responsible for the publication of the StadtKultur-Zeitung. From 2002 to 2015 he was managing director of the city of Schweinfurt Kulturservice GmbH (together with Roland Göb). From 2004 to 2015 he worked as a city home nurse in Schweinfurt. In his practical museum work, Erich Schneider can refer in particular to his participation in numerous building commissions (Galerie Alte Reichsvogtei, 1984; Museum Georg Schäfer , 2000; Stadtbücherei im Ebracher Hof, 2007) and above all to the Kunsthalle Schweinfurt , which opened in May 2009 and which has since then been can refer to around 450,000 visitors (as of December 31, 2015).

On January 1, 2016, Erich Schneider was appointed founding director of the Museum for Franconia in Würzburg .

Erich Schneider is a member of numerous scientific committees: Among other things, he was elected scientific director of the Society for Franconian History in 1996 and a full member of the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 2004 . In 2011 he was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Buchheim Foundation , Bernried am Starnberger See .
