The Catholic parish church of St. Laurentius is a modern church in Buchbach , Upper Franconia , a part of Steinbach am Wald . It is a central building with the altar in the middle. The church is the holy Lawrence of Rome ordained .

history

The modern designed church was built in 1970/71 to replace a Laurentiuskirche in the village center from 1754. On August 15, 1971, the congregation celebrated the inauguration of the house of God, which is also called "Cathedral of the Franconian Forest " in descriptions . The parishioners had done around 40,000 hours of voluntary work. The design was made by the Darmstadt architecture professor Gerhard Mantke based on ideas from Reinhold Goldmann, the parish priest at the time, who was the initiator of the new building.

architecture

The floor plan of the church, which stands on a western slope, is supposed to symbolize the tree of life , with a flat entrance building, the church vestibule, as a trunk and the nave as a crown.

In the center of the church is the altar , around which the pews are arranged in five blocks and steps for the priest in the sixth block, which together form a ring around the altar. In this way the congregation can celebrate mass and communion around the altar. The altar is designed as a chalice and is made of marble . The hexagonal central building has a diameter of 23 meters. The main church is spanned by a self-supporting pyramid-shaped construction made of wood, which is 16 meters high and supported by six external pillars. Six dormers crown the dome, which is covered with sheet copper. They should remind of Christ's crown of thorns and seven gargoyles on the dormer windows and the top of the roof of the sacred number seven .

The church interior is characterized by five 13-meter-long concrete glass windows, which are arranged as colored strips of light and have different messages due to their design.

The 33 meter high church tower is intended to be reminiscent of a coniferous tree in the Franconian Forest. It has the shape of a pyramid with a square floor plan, the sides of which bear four large dormers with the clock faces of the tower clock. The dials are decorated with various symbols. On the top of the church tower above the tower cross stands the church patron Laurentius as a weather vane . Six bells hang in the tower, two of which come from the previous church and four were cast in 1970 in the Rudolf Perner bell foundry in Passau . In the base of the tower there is a chapel, the so-called weekday church, in which some furnishings and statues from the old church are placed.

organ

The organ stands on a gallery, opposite the entrance, behind the altar. It was made by the organ building company Hey Orgelbau from Urspringen . It has 23 registers, 1808 pipes arranged in six triangular frames, and seven slider chests.
