St. Leo (St. Leon-Rot)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Leo was a canon in the area of today's St. Leon .

The monastery was founded around 850 by the family of Bishop Gebhart I of Speyer in order to gain influence on the settlements in the Hardtwald . It lasted for a long time and gave its name to the town of St. Leo (n), which formed there in the 12th century. However, this may have had an early medieval predecessor settlement with a different name.

The monastery experienced its decline in the 12th century. Structural remains were used by religious women around 1227, who moved to Speyer a little later and founded the Reuerinnenkloster there. One last echo of the earlier ecclesiastical importance of St. Leon is its mention as the seat of a dean in 1316.
