Under the name MaK 1200 D , the MaK company built four-axle diesel locomotives with rod drive from 1957 . A total of 14 copies had been built by 1966. These are the most powerful locomotives of the MaK company’s first post-war type range, known as the MaK rod locomotives .

The built-in eight-cylinder MaK MA 301 FAK engines produce 1200 hp (882 kW) at 1000 rpm and are equipped with exhaust gas turbochargers from BBC . The locomotives reach speeds of 63 to 66 km / h with a service weight of 60 to 80 t, depending on the gear setting. The tank capacity is 1500 liters. The diesel engine is started by a compressed air starter, which is fed from two 30 bar compressed air bottles that are stored in the rear front of the machine. The machines are still considered extremely reliable and robust today, which may not least be due to the simple technology.

commitment

Two railway companies received larger deliveries of the type 1200 D: Of the 15 units built, four were sent to the Osthannoversche Eisenbahnen (OHE) and four to the Wanne-Bochum-Herner Eisenbahn (WBHE), the predecessor of the Wanne-Herner Eisenbahn und Hafen (WHE), delivered. Another three copies went to various DEG subsidiaries . Initially, the locomotives were mainly used in heavy freight and special train service, but also in front of passenger trains. After the cessation of passenger traffic and the procurement of more powerful locomotives, the machines were gradually replaced and sold to other companies or scrapped.

In 2005 the last machine of this type, which was still with its first owner, was parked and sold at OHE. It came to Timper Dehn Lokvermietung GbR via AVG (mainly used in the Magdeburg area) and is stored in the Dieringhausen Railway Museum. Another machine is used in the shunting service in the port of Halle . The Darmstadt-Kranichstein Railway Museum also has a MaK 1200 D, which was previously used by BSE , RStE and WEG . Another six machines are currently in use in Italy by various track construction companies, and one machine can also be found in Switzerland at a construction company.
