Saarstahl AG has existed since 1989, but has a much longer company tradition in its individual parts of the company. The company emerged from the mining companies in Völklingen ( Völklingen ironworks of the Röchling brothers , founded in 1881), Neunkirchen ( Neunkircher ironworks, formerly the Stumm brothers , founded in 1806) and Saarbrücken-Burbach ( Saarbrücken ironworks company , founded in 1856). In 1971 the plants in Völklingen and Burbach merged to form Stahlwerke Röchling-Burbach GmbH, which in 1982 merged with the Neunkircher Eisenwerk to form Arbed Saarstahl GmbH under the management of Arbed . This resulted in Saarstahl Völklingen GmbH in 1986 and Saarstahl AG in 1989.
Corporate structure
Shareholders
The majority shareholder of Saarstahl AG with 74.9% of the shares is SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA, the AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke owns 25.1%.
Important holdings
There is a mutual interdependence with Dillinger Hütte, as Saarstahl in turn owns 33.75%. Dillinger Hütte and Saarstahl each hold 50% of the shares in ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar , whose blast furnaces located on the Dillinger Hütte site produce the pig iron required for both companies' steel production. This in turn owns shares in the Saar central coking plant, which is also located on the factory premises . Dillingen is the only location in Saarland where pig iron is produced. The purchasing company of Dillinger Hütte and Saarstahl mbH is operated together with Dillinger Hütte.
Central tasks such as human resources, finance and general administration are taken over by SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar. Essential core processes such as production and sales are carried out independently by the sister companies Saarstahl and Dillinger Hütte.
Saarstahl AG holds another important stake in Zentralkokerei Saar GmbH, in which Saarstahl and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke each indirectly hold 50% of the shares. ZKS produces coke that is intended exclusively for use in ROGESA's blast furnaces
Administration and Sales
Central tasks such as human resources, finance and general administration are taken over by SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar. Essential core processes such as production and sales are carried out independently by Saarstahl.
Areas of activity
Saarstahl AG operates various steel production and processing companies directly and via subsidiaries. The pig iron produced in the ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar in Dillingen is transported by torpedo carts to the blow-molding steelworks at the Völklingen site, where it is processed into steel. There is also an electric steelworks and a rolling mill there. Several rolling mills (wire or fine steel mill) are operated at the Burbach and Neunkirchen locations.
Lime for personal use in the smelting process is u. a. mined in its own limestone mine in Auersmacher.

history
Saarstahl AG was created through the amalgamation of several iron and steel works in Saarland that had existed for much longer. 1971 joined the owned by the industrialist family Röchling Röchling iron and steel works , the Völklingen operated with the holding of the Luxembourg steel group Arbed located Burbach Smelting to Stahlwerke Röchling-Burbach GmbH together. In 1982, Neunkircher Eisenwerk AG , formerly owned by the industrial family Stumm, was added as the third steelworks . Arbed Saarstahl GmbH emerged from this merger .
As a consequence of the steel crisis , there were several changes of ownership, which resulted in the Arbed Saarstahl GmbH to Saarstahl AG renamed. In 1993 the owners were the French steel company Usinor- Sacilor with 70.0%, the Saarland state government with 27.5% and Arbed with 2.5%. Due to the company's economic situation, there were extensive guarantees from the Federal Republic of Germany and the Saarland. In 1993 the company made a daily loss of around DM 1 million, which is why the management under Roland de Bonneville and Guy Dollé decided to open bankruptcy proceedings. The proceedings were opened on July 31, 1993 and lasted until 2001; since then, Saarstahl AG has been active again under its own responsibility. In the course of the bankruptcy proceedings, there were again changes in the ownership structure. As part of the so-called hut solution , a regional ownership structure was created for the two remaining Saarhütten (in addition to Saarstahl AG , Dillinger Hütte ) under the umbrella of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA .
Works
There are three Saarstahl AG locations in Saarland:
- Völklingen
- Saarbrücken -Burbach
- Neunkirchen
There are also several locations of various subsidiaries.
Völklinger Hütte
Saarstahl and its predecessor companies also had a blast furnace system with a blower hall on the factory site in Völklingen. This 1986 finally decommissioned ensemble, Saarstahl plants covers an area of about 10 hectares, only a fraction of the Völklinger with a total of 260 hectares, now forms the UNESCO - World Heritage Site Völklingen .
Saarschmiede
Saarschmiede GmbH in Völklingen forges essential components for power plant construction and the aerospace industry. Well-known semi-finished products are the booster rings for the Ariane 5 rocket. In 2010, € 450 million was invested in new systems in order to align Saarschmiede even more closely with energy engineering. However, the company came under massive pressure as a result of the disaster in Fukushima and the subsequent energy transition. At the end of 2017, the forge was resized and the workforce was halved by around 400 employees in a socially responsible manner.
