The pit Auersmacher is a limestone - mining in the district Auersmacher the Saarland community Kleinblittersdorf . The mine is the largest still working lime mine in Europe and after the cessation of the Saar coal mining in July 2012 the last mine still working in Saarland. The pit closes in 2018. The last limestone was delivered to Dillingen on December 30, 2017 by freight train. Since 2018, the lime for the Dillinger Hütte has been arriving by freight trains from Dugny-sur-Meuse in France . Since the end of 2017, the Auersmacher limestone mine has only been mining in stand-by mode and supplies the Rogesa (Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH) blast furnaces when necessary.

history

The mine tunnel was dug in 1935 and has been producing shell limestone since then in drilling and blasting operations. The lime is used by the sole shareholder of the mine, Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH , in their sintering plants in Dillingen / Saar for pig iron production.

Currently around 1,500 tons per day and around 360,000 tons annually are extracted in two shifts. The material is transported downhill on a conveyor belt to the loading facility on the Saar and transported by freight train along the Saar to Dillingen.

Incidents

Due to the limestone mining under the forest, a deep crater had formed in 2002.

In 2002 there was an open, one-week mine fire. In 2009 a 50 meter high limestone pillar came loose and tore a hole in the ground. This was filled in 2011 with excavated material from the Saarland Therme .
