St. Marcus Church, Wettmar

The St. Marcus Church is a church building belonging to the Evangelical Lutheran parish in Wettmar .

history

There was a small chapel in Wettmar as early as the 12th century. At the beginning of the 14th century a larger church was built, which was dedicated to St. Magnus. This church was destroyed in 1624. In the years 1688 to 1694 the church was rebuilt and expanded. It stood on the edge of the village in the middle of the churchyard and served the community for about 150 years. In 1850 the church was destroyed in a major fire that struck a large part of the village.

The reconstruction of the village and the planning for a new church began in 1851. The building inspector and teacher for architecture Conrad Wilhelm Hase (Hanover) was entrusted with the planning and execution of the new building. The first draft of April 25, 1852 envisaged a church room for 700 to 1,000 people and estimated the costs at 11,000 to 12,000 Reichsthaler. The building drawings were available at the end of 1852. In view of the now estimated construction costs of 17,790 Reichsthalers, Hase had to reduce his designs with a view to the costs. The construction drawings completed on April 17, 1853 envisaged a building with approx. 500 seats. Construction work began in 1854. The new church was consecrated on October 7, 1855 (Thanksgiving).

organ

Historical organ

The organ was built in 1856 by the organ builder Johann Andreas Engelhardt (Herzberg) and was last restored in the years 2005-2006 by the organ builder Bente . The instrument has 15 stops on two manual works and a pedal . Over the years, the sound was changed to reflect the neo-baroque taste of the time by replacing some registers, so that a large part of the historical (pipe) material was lost. The original wind chests and the mechanical action and stop mechanism are preserved . In the course of the last restoration, the instrument was returned to its original condition from 1854 / reconstructed.
