St. Margarethen in Luková

The Church of St. Margaret in Luková was built in 1885. It goes back to a previous building from the time of the settlement of the Landskroner Kessel in the Adlergebirge foothills around 1250.

history

When Luková was first mentioned in 1304, the place was referred to as a parish. Presumably a wooden church already existed at that time. The construction of a wooden church is documented in 1677, which presumably replaced or expanded a previous building. The walls of the wooden church were made of thick, unframed tree trunks. A historical figure shows the wooden church with two different, shingle-roofed naves . It is believed that the lower nave goes back to the old wooden church. In 1682 the church received a massive bell tower, in 1690 a high altar was purchased, the central image of which is St. Margarethe showed.

After the patronage of the church came to the Lukau parish in 1866, the parish decided to build a new church. The old church was demolished and in 1885 today's church was built in neo-Gothic style according to plans by the Landskron master builder Seifert . The new church was built at right angles to the former wooden church. The tower foundation of the old church was left and re-used; the old tower was roughly level with the southern side entrance of today's church. An obelisk in the cemetery surrounding the church marks the location of the altar of the old church.

The high altar from 1690 was put up again in the new church. The organ of the church was built by the Riga company in Jägerndorf . The church was praised primarily for its acoustics and a specialty of the services were hymns with their own tunes, e.g. B. the Christmas carol "You sleep well, heavenly boy" or the so-called year-end song. Several of the Lukau hymns go back to the farmer Richard Thoma, who had been organist and director of the church choir since 1928.
