St. Maria is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Pohja in Finland .

history

The Church of St. Maria in Pohja was built between 1460 and 1480. Most of the work was carried out by local residents under the guidance of foreign experts.

In the Great Northern War (1713–1721) the church lost all furnishings that had not previously been transported or hidden. The repairs took 100 years. The construction of the bell tower in 1827 marked the end of this period.

Furnishing

Over the centuries the church has acquired a multitude of items. In the 19th century, the church was adapted to the Empire style , which shaped it until the 1950s. The altar and pulpit were white, and the pulpit was on the south wall. The windows, the organ prospect and the entire furnishings were changed in favor of simplicity and symmetry.

In the 1950s, the church received its current appearance. The pulpit is back in its old place, the stained glass has replaced the altarpiece, and the altar barrier has been renewed.

  • Votive ship : built by local resident Karl Immonen and donated to the church in 1991; The model is the ship " Coldin "
  • The pulpit was made in Ekenäs in the 17th century based on foreign models . From 1848 to 1951 it was in a storage room. Then it was restored by the woodcarver Axel Lindström , a local resident. Today it is back in its previous place.
  • The patron saint, the Virgin Mary, is the oldest item in the church. Strictly and solemnly she holds the baby Jesus in her arms. The wooden sculpture dates from the 14th century and still bears traces of white, blue, red, silver and gold.
  • Pietà - Versperbild from the 15th century
  • The stained glass of the altar window was made by Kitty Liljequist-Krogius in 1955. It depicts the Sermon on the Mount and the parable of the Good Samaritan in the upper part.
  • Organ from 1862 by Per Larsson Åkerman
