Per Larsson Åkerman
Per Larsson Åkerman (born April 26, 1826 in Vingåker , † July 2, 1876 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish organ builder .
life and work
Per Larsson was a son of Lars Pehrson, who was the head ( rättare ) in Bistorps gård near Vingåker . In 1844 he began training as an organ builder with Johan Samuel Strand in Vingåker. In 1857 he came to Stockholm , where he worked at Blomqvist & Lindgren. He changed his name to Per Larsson Åkerman (after Vingåker ?) In 1850 he graduated as an organ builder from the Music Academy and one from the Technical Institute. Åkerman then continued working at Blomqvist & Lindgren, but also built new organs with Gustav Andersson.
In 1854 he was granted the privilege of organ builder, with which he was entitled to go into business for himself. With a state scholarship he first went to Germany, to the Meyer brothers in Hanover, then to Franz Wilhelm Sonreck in Cologne and finally to Merklin & Schütze in Brussels. For this he intoned a new, large 35-part organ in Paris , which was shown and awarded a prize at the World Exhibition in 1855. In Paris he studied organ building there, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, but probably did not work for Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. He then built the large organ in Murcia's cathedral for Merklin & Schütze .
In 1857 Åkerman returned to Sweden and teamed up with the organ builder Erik Adolf Sellerqvist. Both built several organs, including the large one in Strängnäs Cathedral , which the experts later praised as being unique in Sweden in terms of this level of perfection.
In 1860, Per Åkerman started his own business in Stockholm. In 1866 he took on his colleague Carl Johan Lund as a partner in PL Akerman & Lund . After Åkerman's death in 1876, he took over the workshop and continued to run it. It exists as Äkerman & Lund Orgelbyggeri in Knivsta AB .
Per Larsson Åkerman is now one of the most important Swedish organ builders. He introduced numerous innovations in romantic organ building in Western Europe in Sweden. Åkerman was the first to build Barker levers into his organs, as well as romantic stops such as Euphon and Dulcian .
About 70 new organs by Per Larsson Åkerman are known, in Sweden and in today's Finland. Some have been preserved.
