The church

The Church of St. Maria Friedenskönigin is a Catholic church building in the Brandenburg city of Cottbus .

history

Due to the rapid growth of the Catholic community after the First World War , the Church of the Good Shepherd , built in 1850, did not offer enough space for all believers. That is why a fundraising campaign was launched in 1928, which was also successful, so that today's church could be built in 1934/35. From 1976 to 1982 the church underwent a general renovation and in 1994 it was elevated to the rank of provost church .

Building description

The interior

The church has a long rectangular three-aisled floor plan with a north-facing apse and a double tower facade with a ray cross placed on the connecting bridge. This conceals the entrance area with three portals and a canopy. Above it is a round arch niche with a larger than life figure of Christ.

The interior was originally designed as a traditional Wegkirche with a significantly raised chancel . In the 1970s, the interior was divided by several partition walls, creating a central room that is now used for church services. The altar is now slightly elevated on a transverse axis so that the congregation can gather around it from three sides. In addition, the ambo , chairman's seat and tabernacle are arranged there. The latter has moved out of the central nave so that the area around it can be used as an individual prayer room. The white wooden cross is also on the axis. The original, raised chancel was redesigned in 2015 based on a design by the architect Thomas Woskowski into the approximately 50 m² wide and approximately 11 m high Josefskapelle. In this there is a wall painting and an artistically designed window by the artist Helge Warme. In the chapel, devotions and children's services are held. The building is a listed building .
