The Johanneskirche is a Protestant parish church in Kahren . It is consecrated to John the Baptist and is oldest mentioned in the Meißner diocese register from 1346 as a parish church belonging to the archpriesthood of Cottbus .

Building history

Extension on the north side

The single-nave hall church is a late Gothic building made of coarse field and lawn iron stone from around 1500. The church tower resting on retracted pointed arches inside is possibly older. In the late Gothic period, it was raised in a square and closed off with a crenellated wreath and stone helmet .

In 1706 the village church was expanded to include a polygonal east end . In the 19th century, symmetrical extensions made of half-timbered or brick followed on the north and south sides.

During the Second World War the church was damaged by bombs and fragments. A renovation of the church building was not possible during the GDR period because the place Kahren was to be sacrificed to lignite mining . The congregation has only been able to look after the maintenance of its church since 1990. The roof structure was built in 2010 and a. renovated with state funds.

The interior has a flat ceiling and a gallery .

The wooden altarpiece from the 16th century shows depictions of the sacrifice of Isaac , the Lord's Supper and the adoration of the shepherds . The altar crucifix was made in 1791. Restoration work on the altar began in the early 1990s.

The pulpit from 1706 is a carving , probably by the Muskau master thirty marks . The pulpit basket fields show the Salvator , the four evangelists and the donor coats of arms.

The St. John's bowl with its head from the 15th century reminds of the consecration of the church.

Furthermore, the church is equipped with a floating baptismal angel from the 18th century. This includes a baptismal dish from 1704 with the alliance coat of arms of Pannwitz / von Lüderitz.
