Johann Gottlieb Fabricius (born February 12, 1681 in Schwerin an der Warthe ; † December 30, 1741 in Cottbus ) was a German Protestant theologian who was influenced by Pietism and the founder of the Lower Sorbian written language.

Life

Fabricius studied Protestant theology from 1697 at the universities of Halle and Gießen . Through the mediation of Baron Carl Hildebrand von Canstein , who encouraged the Royal Prussian Ober-Jäger-Meister and Kahren landlord Christian von Pannwitz (1655-1703) in his efforts to speak the Sorbian language, he was given the vacant pastor's position at the beginning of 1702 Appointed Kahren. In 1709 he became pastor in Peitz , and in 1726 superintendent in Cottbus.

In his parish village of Kahren, Fabricius set up a Sorbian printing house in 1706 with the help of his patroness, the widowed Anna Justina von Pannwitz, in order to produce Lower Sorbian editions of Luther's Small Catechism (1706) and the New Testament (1709) using older translations .

Honors

A street in Peitz is named after Fabricius. In 2006 a memorial stele initiated by the city of Cottbus and the Kahren parish was unveiled in his honor.
