St. Mary Queen

history

With the growth of the stoneware industry and the digestion of the first brown coal mine Sybilla 1891 was first before the First World War the Severinus community in the Upper Village of Frechen ausgepfarrt . With the further growth of the industrial community in the Reinischen lignite district after the Second World War (11,000 members in 1954 / 6,000 regular churchgoers ), the need for another church for the northern districts arose. The office of the Cologne architect Rudolf Schwarz received the planning order in the early 1950s. His wife Maria Schwarz and Karl Wimmenauer were employees . The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 19, 1952, the day of the 1200th anniversary of the St. Audomar mother parish ; it was consecrated on October 10, 1954.

Building description

The church, built from unsorted ring kiln bricks (from Brauweiler), has a trapezoidal floor plan. It widens from the entrance to the chancel, which becomes the center of the church. The wood-paneled flat ceiling and the gable roof also rise up there, especially stepped up from the beginning of the choir room. Light falls into the church from the large entrance window opposite and the ceiling-high side windows in front of the choir. Otherwise the side walls are windowless. A small semicircular cone is built into the choir wall, roof-high. The square bell tower, which towers above the church, stands next to the church. Its windows are quite small in the lower area. The bells are hung behind three almost square sound windows and finally a wide rectangular sound window.

There is a crypt under the sanctuary of the modern church , where smaller services are celebrated.

Furnishing

Particularly eye-catching is the altar, which is designed as a crown, probably a design by Maria Schwarz.

Bells

The five bronze bells were cast by the Mabilon bell foundry in 1962.
