Sanctuary

The Protestant village church of St. Marien is in the Mattstedt community in the Weimarer Land district in Thuringia .

history

The construction of the old Mattstedt church began around the year 1000, influenced by the Benedictine monastery of St. Gotthardt Heusdorf. During the Thirty Years' War the church was plundered by Swedes passing through and used as quarters . As a result, the nave became dilapidated and had to be demolished in 1654. With the approval of Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst, money was successfully collected all over Germany for the 1707 renovation of the nave in its current form.

The pulpit behind the altar was built at the beginning of the 18th century and restored in 1865. During the restoration in the 1980s, Horst Jahresling was the consultant.

The bell tower was restored in 2006. There are three bells in it , including the newly cast St. Mary's bell. The organ was installed around 1800. The longship and the annex were restored in 2016 and rededicated in October of the same year.
