St. Marien (Limburg an der Lahn)
The Catholic monastery church of St. Marien in the east of the central Hessian city of Limburg an der Lahn is part of the Pallottine monastery , which has been located in the city since 1892 .
architecture
With a considerable contribution from the Pallottines, the church was built from 1925 to 1927 in Expressionist architecture according to plans by Jan Hubert Pinand , who was influenced by Dominikus Böhm . The two spiers, which are rather modest compared to the thickness of the facade and which, together with the central opening in the tower, give the impression of two towers, deliberately avoided trumpeting the Limburg Cathedral . The opening is divided into two parts, a window in the lower area and a sound opening for the bell ringing in the upper area. This northeast side is comparable to a Romanesque westwork . Compared to the Limburg buildings from the Middle Ages or from the early modern period, the Marienkirche is characterized by the style of the early 20th century.
history
The Church of St. Marien was consecrated on October 2, 1927 by Limburg Bishop Kilian . The church was threatened with closure during World War II. This was prevented by declaring it a parish church in 1944. Like the entire monastery complex, St. Marien is a cultural monument and, together with it, forms the overall monument preservation complex on Frankfurter Strasse.
