Christopher Morgan (born June 4, 1808 in Aurora , New York , † April 3, 1877 in Auburn , New York) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1839 and 1843 he represented New York State in the US House of Representatives . Congressman Edwin B. Morgan was his brother and Congressman Noyes Barber was his uncle.

Career

Christopher Morgan was born in Cayuga County about four years before the outbreak of the British-American War . He pursued Classical Studies and then graduated from Yale College in 1830 . Morgan studied law . After receiving his license to practice law, he began practicing in Aurora. Politically, he was a member of the Whig Party . In the 1838 congressional elections for the 26th Congress , Morgan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 24th  constituency of New York , where he succeeded William H. Noble on March 4, 1839 . He was re-elected once. In 1842 he suffered a defeat in his re-election and then resigned from Congress on March 3, 1843 . After his time in Congress, he moved to Auburn in 1843, where he resumed his practice as a lawyer. Between 1847 and 1851 he was Secretary of State of New York. During this time he became Supterintendent of the New York Public Schools in 1848 - a post he held until 1852. He was mayor of Auburn in 1860 and 1862. Then he served as a trustee at the state insane asylum in Utica . He died on April 3, 1877 in Auburn. His body was buried in Fort Hill Cemetery .
