history

The Schiffercompagnie was founded in 1488 as the St. Marienbruderschaft der Schiffer in Stralsund in the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. In the founding deed, a 37-page parchment document that has been preserved to this day, it says:

“In God's name, amen. So it happened according to God's Word in the year 1488 in January that a boatman donated and raised to sin to praise and honor God, to honor his dedicated mother Mary, and to honor the holy apostle St. James, St. Anne, St. Christopher, St. Clara, for the consolation and bliss of all Christian souls. Amen."

Below are the names of 50 boatmen. On November 11, 1488, four Stralsund boatmen donated money for St. Mary.

The foundation was completed on January 12, 1489. When aged men day Jacob Roleke and Matthias Radevan were elected on that.

The brotherhood gave itself a statute , the main goals of which were the support of the needy, the protection of shipowners and boatmen from attacks on their property and the maintenance of the order of navigation. Probably the first 21 articles were written when the brotherhood was founded. The Brotherhood did not expressly emancipate itself from the city council ; This is actually only referred to by an article in which the council is asked to approve the erection of an altar in the Nikolaikirche (St. Nikolai is the patron saint of seafarers).

In 1502, however, there were first interventions in internal affairs on the part of the council, which until then had tolerated the brotherhood because of its social commitment. In Article 25, the magistrate of the Brotherhood now stipulated that only seafaring men were to be admitted. The order of the celebrations was also dictated by the council. In 1624 the city council issued a complete set of rules for the "Schiffer-Gesellschaft".

In the defense of the siege of Stralsund by Wallenstein's troops from February 1628, when Count Arnim occupied Dänholm and only cleared it for a ransom, one member of the shipping company stood out: Peter Blome , who later became admiral of the Swedish troops, received the from the council Order to manage the Stralsund fleet. On April 5, 1628, he forced the evacuation of the Dänholm, which had been secretly occupied again by Arnim. Blome was elected Altermann of the Schiffercompagnie in 1630.

The chronicles of the Schiffercompagnie identify the recipients of alms for the time after the end of the Thirty Years War . So asked a Martinus Dülflahn from Bützow "... because I have to stay here because of the devastation of my parish, and the food is getting very little, so my very friendly request to Mr. Altermann, he would, considering my miserable condition but also remember me when distributing to the other poor and needy and miserable, request that I receive a portion of the beneficio Stralsund, January 3rd, 1641. " Further entries about donations for the needy testify the social component of the brotherhood. In 1702 there are 93 poor recipients of charity.

With the beginning of Swedish rule in Stralsund, the rights of the brotherhood were partially curtailed by Swedish decrees. Numerous such ordinances are kept in the archives of the Schiffercompagnie. In 1766, the skippers of the Swedish motherland were better off than their Stralsund colleagues in customs matters. In a letter of homage to King Gustav III, who has just come to the throne . In addition to an homage, you can mainly read a complaint about these injustices.

In 1979 a woman was accepted for the first time and entered in the brothers' book, which has been kept continuously since 1693 .

The Stralsund Schiffercompagnie still exists today and is operated in the form of an association . The Schaffermahl is one of the traditional events .
