St. Martin (Engers)
The parish church of St. Martin in the Neuwied district of Engers in Rhineland-Palatinate was built in 1896 in neo-Romanesque forms. The Catholic Church belongs to the dean's office Rhein-Wied in the diocese of Trier . November 21, 2003, she is under monument protection .
history
The original Martinskirche was a royal foundation from the Frankish times. Engers was already the mother parish of a deanery in 906 under Archbishop Radbod von Trier. In the 14th century, the construction of a Gothic parish church St. Martin in Engers is reported, which is depicted in a copper engraving by Merian around 1600 . During the great town fire of Engers in 1778, the church burned down to the remains of the choir. As a flat-roofed hall church in the Baroque style, it was rebuilt in 1783, the remaining Gothic choir was included in the new building. This church was demolished in 1896 because it was now too small for the larger community.
Today's St. Martin Church was built in neo-Romanesque form by Josef Moritz from Cochem according to plans by the Düsseldorf architect Busch . The foundation stone for the new church was laid in June 1897. In September 1898 she was taken from the church to worship in use and the Bishop of Trier on June 21, 1900 Michael Felix Korum consecrated .
The organ was completed in 1909 and four bronze bells were installed in 1924, which were melted down for war purposes in 1942.
