history

The town church of St. Martin. In front of it the monument in honor of Conradin Kreutzer

St. Martin is an originally Gothic hall church as a Franconian foundation around 750, was rebuilt in 1526 as a late Gothic columned basilica by Lorenz Reder under Gottfried Werner von Zimmer . It was redesigned between 1769 and 1773 in the Rococo style and decorated with paintings by Andreas Meinrad von Au and Stuck by Johann Jakob Schwarzmann from Schnifis . The Baroque style St. John of Nepomuk Chapel ( Nepomukkapelle ) was from 1732 to 1739 as an extension to the Gothic church under the patronage of Mr. Prince Froben Ferdinand von Furstenberg-Meßkirch and according to plans by Johann Caspar Bagnato built and by the Munich Asam brothers ( Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam ) around the relics of St. Nepomuk . In June 2010 it became known that the roof structure of the Nepomuk Chapel was completely penetrated by dry rot, so that the roof hood had to be removed and replaced with a new one. The chapel is owned by the Princely Fürstenberg Administration.

Furnishing

Picture of the three kings by the master of Messkirch

The outstanding sacred late Rococo room makes the parish church of St. Martin the last late Rococo church in Upper Swabia. The furnishings include the important picture of the three kings by the master von Meßkirch (around 1535), part of an altar donated around 1538. Grave monuments of the Counts of Zimmer and Prince of Fürstenberg are artistically high-quality examples of German tombstone art from the Renaissance bronze cast epitaphs of the Counts of Zimmer from the 16th century to the stucco epitaph of the 18th century (Fürstenberg epitaph by Johann Joseph Christian , 1775–1776). The large ceiling painting, which the painter Andreas Meinrad von Ow painted in 1773, shows the apotheosis of St. Martin (and among other things the holy home wheel of Meßkirch ).

The church was renovated around 2009/2010 by the Archbishop's Ordinariate in Freiburg .
