The Catholic parish church of St. Mauritius is a listed church building in Bachem , a district of Frechen in the Rhein-Erft district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The simple brick hall , closed on three sides, was built in 1721. He stands in the middle of a cemetery. The front west tower under a lantern-crowned tail hood was built in the 20th century.

A larger one was built apart from this church. The remaining furnishings , the windows and the church interior were gradually devastated. From 1978 a complete internal and external repair was started. The masonry surfaces were re-grouted and impregnated. The cornices and stone coverings were partially renewed; the entrance stairs were relocated. The roofs were renewed with a new covering with Moselle slate. Inside, the cement plaster was removed from the base masonry and the wet masonry underneath was dried; after that the plaster was renewed. The pumice stone masonry in the tower area was exchanged for brick masonry . During the renovation of the floor, the foundations of a baroque church tower and a Romanesque baptismal font were uncovered. A previously unknown crypt was also found. The bluestone grave slab is to be laid in front of the main altar as a visible floor slab. The restoration is not finished yet. The future use of the church has yet to be decided.

One of the bells in the church deserves special attention. The bell consecrated to all saints from (presumably) 1356 came from the church of St. Maria ad Gradus in Cologne, which was declined after the secularization, to St. Mauritius and is still in service there today.
