St. Michael's Church (Ditton)
St Michael's Church is a Roman Catholic church in St. Michael's Road, Ditton , Widnes , Cheshire . It is on the National Heritage List for England as a Grade II * building.
history
German Jesuits , who had to leave the German Reich in 1872 because of Bismarck's Kulturkampf , founded the church. The Jesuit theology students formed a community in Ditton Hall until a new training center was available in Valkenburg , the Netherlands, in 1895. Between 1876 and 1879 they built the church designed by Henry Clutton. The cost of £ 16 000 was taken over by Lady Mary Stapleton-Bretherton of Ditton Hall. In 1979 the interior was rearranged. The church belongs to the Archdiocese of Liverpool .
architecture
The neo-Gothic church consists of red ashlar sandstone with a slate roof on the barrel vault. The floor plan is cross-shaped with a west tower. The altar and lectern are made of Clipsham stone, the glass comes from Cologne.
