Church of St. Michael in Holheim

St. Michael is a Catholic branch church in the Nördlingen district of Holheim . It shapes the village image, stands on a rock spur, is Romanesque in the nave and early Gothic in the choir and choir tower . It was the center of an extensive, multi-towered defense system of the old royal estates in the Ries .

History of origin

Presumably built on the remains of a wooden church - Holheim is already mentioned in the 9th century - it was rebuilt in a fortified cemetery at the end of the 12th century with a nave and a small apse , which ended at the beginning of today's Gothic choir .

The Gothic choir with tower was added around 1400. The old and damp sacristy gave way to a dry and much larger room in the 1960s.

In 1871 the Holheim church was to be demolished and rebuilt in the style of neo-Gothic historicism . But the old church was redesigned: the most important changes were a new neo-Gothic altar , an oversized south-facing choir window, an enlarged entrance door and the installation of a gallery .

During the restoration of the church between 1973 and 1975, the room was given its original Romanesque-Gothic face, the entrance door and window were given their original shape and the gallery was removed again.
