history
The place has existed since the early Middle Ages , as evidenced by Alemannic row graves from the 6th and 7th centuries and a deed of donation from the Fulda monastery from the 8th century. This makes the place one of the oldest Ries communities. The Catholic Church of St. Michael , which was built in the Romanesque style , dates back to the 13th century and is one of the few fortified churches in the Ries. A local nobility of the Middle Ages is proven by numerous documents, whose coat of arms became the municipal coat of arms of Holheim. The castle hill can still be seen today. On July 1, 1972, Holheim lost its independence in the course of the municipal reform and was incorporated into the city of Nördlingen.
Culture and sights
The Ofnet caves can be visited near Holheim . You are in the ring wall of the crater. These are cave ruins that have been cut by a dry valley on the side facing away from the Ries . The Ofnet caves were inhabited from the Middle Paleolithic to the Mesolithic . During excavations, animal remains and grave goods were found, including 4,000 perforated snails and 200 pierced deer teeth, which were probably worn as jewelry .
At the foot of the Ofnet caves there is a Roman manor ( villa rustica ), the foundation walls of which have been completely preserved.
