The Catholic parish church of St. Michael in Ingelheim-Süd is a post-Reformation building and has existed since 1721 .

architecture

The church is a single-nave hall structure. The most striking feature is the separation of the church house and the bell tower. The high altar from 1747 is the work of the Mainz carpenter Wolfgang Joseph Wieß. There are two side altars in the Chorgenick:

The so-called plague cross on the north wall of the nave is particularly worth seeing . The crossbeam, which runs at an acute angle towards the longitudinal beam, is striking. On this is the crucified Christ covered with plague bumps. The original is now in the Diocesan Museum in Mainz .

history

Due to the relatively late introduction of the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate , there were only Catholic churches in the area of today's Ingelheim. After the turmoil of the Reformation and the Thirty Years' War , the former Catholic St. Wigbert Church, today's Burgkirche, was assigned to the Reformed community. This created the need for the Catholic community to build their own place of worship.

The foundation stone for the new church took place on May 1, 1721 in the presence of Elector Karl III. Philipp instead. The foundation stone bears the inscription:

ANO 1721 DE ITEN MAI / IS THE FIRST G. STONE IN / TAKEN THE H. DRIFALT = / IGNITURE AND HRO. CHRFUR = / STL. DURCHL.CP UNSE = / RS GNDN HERRN, AS AU = / CH IHRO HOCHW: GNADEN / GOTTO FRDUS LANGWERTH / V. BE LAID WOR = / DEN JOH. PETER / LYON MAURER MASTER

On October 8, 1767 , the church was consecrated by the Mainz Auxiliary Bishop Christoph Nebel , who also consecrated the newly built St. Remigius Church in Nieder-Ingelheim on the same day .

Bells

The tones of the bells are coordinated with the ringing of the neighboring evangelical castle church .
