The St. Michaelis Church in Hohenaspe
Memorial stone for the dead children from 1943

The St. Michaelis Church in Hohenaspe in the Steinburg district in Schleswig-Holstein is one of the oldest churches in the region.

The church was first mentioned around 1281. The stone building originally comes from the Romanesque era and has been repaired and expanded in brick over the centuries. The church is a large hall with a separate bell cage. The interior is particularly characterized by the Gothic winged altar from 1460 and the patronage chair of Margrave Friedrich Ernst von Brandenburg-Kulmbach , who resided nearby in Friedrichsruh Palace. The margrave and his wife are also buried in the crypt of the Hohenasper church.

There is a cemetery around the church, with a memorial stone from the accident in Ottenbüttel in February 1943, where many children died. The church organist , Bernhard Schmalfeldt (1871–1950), is also buried here.
