Wilderich Freiherr von Ketteler (born June 14, 1809 in Harkotten , † July 29, 1873 in Thüle ) was a German squire and politician.

Life

Wilderich Max Freiherr von Ketteler was the sixth child of ten children of Maximilian von Ketteler auf Harkotten (1779–1832), district administrator in the Warendorf district ; and his wife Clementine geb. Frein von der Wenge zu Beck (see Beck Castle and Wenge House ), (1778–1844). He was an older brother of Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler, Bishop of Mainz, and the younger brother of Clemens von Ketteler (1806–1881). He was married to Marie Sophie Pauline, b. Countess zu Stolberg-Stolberg , widowed baronessNagel von Ittlingen (1810–1889). His wife was the youngest daughter of the poet, translator and lawyer Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1750-1819). He was the father of the politician Friedrich Clemens von Ketteler . His granddaughter Hedwig Friederike Maria Elisabeth Huberta Margareta Felicitas von Ketteler (parents: Otto Andreas von Ketteler and Elisabeth Hedwig Schaffgotsch) was married to Karl von Wolff called Metternich (district administrator in the Höxter district).

Estates

Ketteler owned the Alst house from 1843–1852 , which he had acquired from the son of Maximilian-Friedrich von Droste zu Hülshoff , and in 1848 acquired the Thüle house with land and forest in the town of the same name near Salzkotten . He managed the estate himself and increased the property by buying land. A model agricultural and forestry operation was developed from a dilapidated estate under his management.

Political activity

Ketteler was a member of the Prussian National Assembly in 1848 and a member of the second chamber of the Prussian Landtag between 1852 and 1855 . There he belonged to the Catholic faction . In 1863 Ketteler was President of the 15th German Catholic Convention . In 1864 he initiated the Soest Conferences, which eventually led to the establishment of the Center Party and is one of the signatories of the Soest program . From 1871 until his death in 1873 he was a member of the German Reichstag as a member of the constituency of Minden 4 ( Paderborn - Büren ) .

Descendants with the name Wilderich

By Wilderich be relatively rare first name in the family Ketteler was at home (Max). That was the name of his grandson, the heir to his son Friedrich Clemens von Ketteler , who lived from 1864 to 1905, (Wilhelm) Wilderich. His son and heir, who lived from 1901 to 1957, was also called Wilderich (Max). He passed the name on to his second youngest son Wilderich (* 1947) and to his nephew and godson Wilderich von Droste zu Hülshoff . A grandson of Wilderich (Max), Wilderich Freiherr von Ketteler at Linnep Castle , continues this naming tradition to this day.
