Karl von Wolff called Metternich (baptized name: Karl Leopold Wilhelm Joseph Maria Hubertus) (born March 1, 1878 in Wehrden , † November 12, 1939 in Höxter ) was a Prussian district administrator.

Origin and family

Karl von Wolff called Metternich was born as the son of the married couple Philipp Otto Friedrich Wittekind von Wolff called Metternich ( Prussian Chamberlain ) and Mathilde von Fürstenberg and belonged to the Westphalian noble family Wolff-Metternich , which was originally located in Hesse. His great-grandfather Philipp was the district administrator of the Höxter district. His grandfather was Klemens August Hermann (* 1803, † 1872), married to Augusta von Hartmann (* 1818, † 1880). His brother Friedrich was district administrator of the Höxter district. His older brother, Klemens, was President of the Province of Brandenburg . He was entrant and manor owner of Wehrden Castle . On April 23, 1912, Karl von Wolff married Hedwig Friederike Maria Elisabeth Huberta Margareta Felicitas von Ketteler (parents: Otto Andreas von Ketteler and Elisabeth Hedwig Schaffgotsch) in Schurgast .

Professional background

After leaving certificate on 15 February 1899 at the School of Paderborn he studied at the universities of Strasbourg , Munich and Göttingen law and insisted on 17 February 1902, the examination to the court clerk at the Higher Regional Court of Celle with the result "sufficient". On October 3, 1902, he was appointed court trainee at the Hamm Higher Regional Court and in November 1905 went to the Arnsberg government as a government trainee . The examination for government assessor followed on June 12, 1906 with the result “sufficient” and with the appointment as government assessor on July 17, 1909. This was followed by activities at the district office of Oels and the governments of Merseburg and Düsseldorf . On January 3, 1916, von Wolff was entrusted with the administration of the district office of the Dortmund district and on August 22, 1916 was appointed a member of the government . On January 11, 1917, he was given the job of municipal administration for the Höxter district office. The district council elected him on June 28, 1917 with 15 to 1 votes as the first candidate for the district office. The definitive appointment as district administrator of the Höxter district followed on August 15, 1917. He remained in this office until July 13, 1918, when he was dismissed from civil service at his own request without any pension entitlement (due to the death of his brother, Karl had to take over the administration of Take over family goods). He performed his military service as a one-year volunteer in the hussar regiment "Emperor Nicholas II of Russia" (1st Westphalian) No. 8 in Paderborn as a first lieutenant . He took part in the fighting in World War I from August 2, 1914 to February 1, 1916.
