history

The Nikolaikirche was built in the 12th century in Romanesque style. It is therefore the oldest church in the old town and served as a parish church for the market settlement.

But it is also assumed that it was once the castle chapel of the royal palace . In the 15th century it was used as a warehouse and later as a granary . It was also set up as a shed for the ducal fleet and as a riding arena before it became a sugar beet factory . In 1850 it served as a poor house and today it is a residential building. Everything did not pass her by without a trace.

The former church is entered in the list of cultural monuments in Saalfeld / Saale .
