The Protestant village church St. Nikolai is in the Sundhausen district of the city of Gotha in the Gotha district in Thuringia .

history

Around 700 Augustinian monks began building a monastery, the “Münchshof”. Mainly they practiced agriculture and sheep breeding, in the archives about ten shock animals are mentioned. The monastery was obliged to Hersfeld, from around 1350 the monks “served the Lords of Reinersborn” (Reinhardsbrunn). The first church may have been built around 1200. Before that, the Sundhäuser went to the neighboring village of Gossenborn, which no longer existed for a long time. The road to there is still called Kirchweg.

Today's village church St. Nikolai was built from 1729 to 1730 by the baroque master builder Johann Erhard Straßburger (1675–1754) on the property of the previous church, the first mention of which is not known. The medieval north-west tower was taken over from the previous building.

The church was probably painted around 1740/1741 by the Gotha court painter Johann Heinrich Ritter (1685 / 1690–1751). Four ceiling paintings have been preserved from the large fields of the flat ceiling :

In 1790, the organ by Johann Nicolaus Langenhan from Gotha was installed in the newly built nave . It was moved from the second to the first gallery in 1980 and 1986 by the Manfred & Siegfried Sperlich brothers , restored and expanded and now has 28 registers and 2 manuals.

In the belfry of wood are two bells . They come from the Schilling bell foundry company in Apolda from 1921.

In April 2015, the southern part of the cemetery wall with the portal was expertly restored from the old stones.

The parishes of Sundhausen , Boilstädt , Leina and Gospiteroda joined forces on January 1, 2014 to form the Evangelical Lutheran Boxberg Parish of Sundhausen. It belongs to the Gotha parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . The number of church members is 863.
