Sundhausen is a district of the district and residence city of Gotha .
location
Sundhausen is about three kilometers southwest of the city center of Gotha on the Leinakanal. The Windebach (drains the Grosser Berlach hill, which is up to 353 m above sea level ) and the Sülzengraben , the Beetengraben and the Tiefenbachgraben , which unite to form the Ratsrinne , Gotha's most important natural watercourse, flow through the village . The place is on the Thuringian Railway between Eisenach and Erfurt . Sundhausen also has three stops on the Thuringian Forest Railway (TWSB). Due to the location, the state road L 1027 runs to Gotha in the north-east and Leina and Wahlwinkel in the south-west, with a connection to the federal motorway B 4, junction Gotha-Boxberg. From the L 1027, the Kreisstraße 5 branches off between Sundhausen and Leina in the direction of Boxberg with the horse racing track. The district hospital complex ( Helios Kliniken ) is located on the western edge of the town .
history
Sundhausen was first mentioned in 786. In the Middle Ages, the place was part of the castle district of Tenneberg Castle near Waltershausen ( Tenneberg Office ) and was a station on the important trade route (Schweinaer Straße) that led across the Thuringian Forest near Waltershausen and Schweina towards Bad Salzungen .
At the beginning of April 1945, the first American tank appeared in what was then E.-Zunkel-Strasse (today Friedensstrasse) and was greeted by a resident with a white flag.
In 2011, a festival week was held to mark the 1225th anniversary of the town's existence.
Today the district has an area of 11.94 km² and 1,576 inhabitants.
Culture and sights
The St. Nikolai Church in Gotha-Sundhausen can look back on a history dating back to 1730. It was built on the site of a previous church, from which the current tower remains.
There is a war cemetery in the cemetery (which you have to look for): Five men and one woman died between 1942 and 1947, a tombstone was placed for each. Eight soldiers were buried in a communal grave with a tombstone: five died on April 3, 1945, one on March 31, 1945 and two in "April 1945".
