history

The church of Wahlwinkel
In the main street

During construction work between 1954 and 1957, extensive traces of settlement and remains of Stone Age houses (line ceramic) and a settlement from the late Roman imperial era were examined on the local road to Ibenhain .

In 1106, parts of the area around Waltershausen were still owned by Count Siegmund von Orlamünde. In 1186, the Thuringian landgraves gave their house monastery Reinhardsbrunn a gift of forest and lands: the places Iwinhagen (= Ibenhain), Snephindal (= Schnepfenthal) and Walwinkilhart (= Wahlwinkel) are named in a directory. Later the place was a 'care village' in the Tenneberg office .

In the Middle Ages, the place was considered to be relatively strongly fortified, it had fences, clay walls and gates, in front of which there was a surrounding village moat. A frivolously concluded contract with the neighboring town of Waltershausen meant that the village stream was diverted towards Waltershausen, the townspeople insisted on the validity of the agreements, the farmers were left behind. Two major fires in 1783 and 1863 wiped out many neat farms from the village. It was incorporated into Waltershausen on July 1, 1950. Many residents found jobs in the city's industrial plants, and as a result, numerous new buildings were built on the edge of the historic location. Next to the church, a modern multi-purpose building and community center was opened in 2011 on the occasion of the local anniversary.

St. Gotthard village church

The St. Gothardus Church is the oldest building in the village, and the patron saint is also the patron saint of the district town of Gotha. In Wahlwinkel there was a pleban (pastor) Heinrich Ysnal in 1297. Auxiliary Bishop Heinrich in Erfurt first mentioned the church in 1401 in connection with a letter of indulgence . In 1496 a new church was consecrated. In 1827/28 the church had to be demolished and rebuilt due to its dilapidation. On this occasion, a new organ was built by Georg Andreas Hesse in Dachwig in 1829 . The lower tower room is covered by a groin vault, with tracery and sound openings the tower dates from 1505. It has not changed its appearance since 1724 until today. It is covered with slate and has a tail dome with a lantern and a tower ball with a weather vane . Inside the church the visitor finds a circumferential double gallery and a pulpit altar and, as a special feature, an early Gothic crypt . In 1994/96 the church had to be restored because the vaulted ceiling had collapsed as a result of moisture. From 2001 to 2005 the Hesse organ was restored by Orgelbau Waltershausen . The church is currently (2011) being renovated. The parish belongs to the Hörselgau parish.

The distinguishing feature of the Wahlwinkler population

As evidence of coarse folk humor, neck names and nicknames that characterize each village developed centuries ago . Accordingly, the blue stockings lived here in the village - the name probably means a reference to the woad dyeing trade. The blue-colored wool socks of Wahlwinkler costume could have been a distinguishing mark of the place that differentiated them from the neighboring towns.
