St. Nikolaus (Heringhausen)

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Nikolaus is a church building in Heringhausen , a district of Bestwig in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) that characterizes the town.

History and architecture

The previous church was rebuilt several times in the course of time and no longer met the spatial requirements.

The new building was built from 1965 to 1966 based on designs by the architect Heinrich Stiegemann . The shorter sides of the elongated structure are rounded. The single nave nave under a gable roof tapers towards the altar. The sanctuary tapers slightly in the opposite direction. The straight ridge has sloping eaves . The roof is slated, the outer and inner walls are painted white. The ceiling is clad with wood, it follows the shape of the roof. The side windows in the chancel are separated by inclined wall tongues and are therefore not visible from the ship . They thus result in indirect lighting. The ship is illuminated through the windows in the side walls. The defining element in the church is a glass wall at the back. It shows the representation of the heavenly Jerusalem and was made to designs by Wilhelm de Graaff and Nikolaus Bette. The singers' gallery is the full width of the wall under the glass window, the organ prospect was built on the left corner. The sacristy attached to the side stands under the second gallery.

Steeple

The church tower stands on a hexagonal plan next to the church. It is crowned with a tent roof. The upper area is divided by sound openings, it was slated later. The ground floor is used as a chapel and is accessed via a short corridor from the church.

Furnishing

  • The organ has 2 manuals, 36 ranks and 25 registers.
  • The confessional and the worship niche are under the gallery.
  • The stone altar stands in the raised chancel.
  • Behind the altar is a stele with a cross; it is a work by Wilhelm Winkelmann.
  • The portals and the tabernacle also come from Winkelmann.
