Parish Church of St. Nicholas

St. Nikolaus is a parish church in the baroque style in Klein-Krotzenburg . The foundations point back to previous buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. In its current form, it is laid out in the shape of a cross, divided into a nave and a transept and is located in the center of the village of Klein-Krotzenburg. In 1988 it burned down almost completely for reasons that are not yet clear, it was reconstructed and re-consecrated in 1991. The Liebfrauenheide is also part of the parish of St. Nikolaus .

History of the Church and Parish

At 250 years of age, the present-day church is a relatively young building, purely in terms of church history, but its foundations point to predecessor churches that are much older. The parish of Klein-Krotzenburg was first mentioned in 1175 as "Crucenburch". The name "Cruc" is derived from "cross" and indicates a community that was already influenced by Christianity at that time. Since around 1300 there was a separate parish with priests from Seligenstadt Abbey . The construction of a church is first mentioned around 1366, but it was demolished a little later for reasons that are no longer known. A second building in the Gothic style can be traced back to the 15th century. The "Gothic Choir" still preserved today indicates Palm Sunday of 1437 with a year carved into the wall . A papal bull dated December 8, 1513 decreed that the congregation should become part of the Seligenstadt Abbey, so that the congregation lost its independence. A document dated November 13, 1517 mentions the church for the first time in connection with the mission of pastoral care for Klein-Krotzenburg.

In 1602 the church was enlarged, but badly damaged or destroyed in the turmoil of the Thirty Years War . Appeals for donations from the years 1670 to 1680 point to the construction or reconstruction of the church. For reasons that have not been handed down, the new church was demolished shortly afterwards. Remnants of the foundation and wall that were discovered during renovation work in the mid-1970s could have provided information on the reasons on closer examination, but detailed research was not carried out in order not to interrupt the rapid progress of the work.

The miraculous image of Our Lady of Sorrows was created around 1620 and can be seen today in the Liebfrauenheide chapel. The wooden carved and painted miraculous image was found by a shepherd in a hollow oak in 1648. Before the Thirty Years' War there was a place called Dreckshausen at the place , which was destroyed during the war. It is believed that someone from the village hid the image, which indicates an amateur artist in terms of processing and art style, in order to protect it from looting.

After the war and the plague, the community had shrunk to nine families. In 1711 the present rectory was built as the summer residence of the Seligenstadt Abbey under Abbot Franz Blöchinger. In 1736 the first chapel was built on the Liebfrauenheide. The foundation stone of the baroque parish church was laid in 1754. In 1755 the pilgrimage to the Liebfrauenkapelle was forbidden, the building was sold and demolished and the image of grace was transferred to the parish church. On October 5th of the same year the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Christoph Nebel .
