St. Nicholas under the Krudum

The desert church St. Nikolaus unterm Krudum (Czech Kostel sv. Mikuláše pod Krudumem ) is a legendary former sacral building in the Kaiserwald , Czech Republic . The church, which probably disappeared in the 16th century, could not be located for 500 years; its remains were only rediscovered in 2002.

The church was located six kilometers west of Horní Slavkov near Hrušková at the northern foot of the three-peak Krudum .

history

Nothing is known about the origins of the church. Since they are dedicated to St. Nikolaus was consecrated as the patron saint of merchants and was located on an old trade route from Eger via Königsberg , Schlaggenwald , Beschau and Luditz to Prague , suggests that it was built as a Wegekirche. On the other hand, the Krudum was one of the centers of silver and tin mining in the Kaiserwald in the 13th century.

The first mention of the Church of St. Nicholas took place in 1253, when King Wenceslas I , the St. Wenceslas Church in Loket with the affiliated churches St. Wolfgang, St. John and St. Nicholas Prague Knights of the Cross with the Red Star left . Further medieval mentions, however, did not allow an exact conclusion about the location of the church.

Researches

At the beginning of the 20th century, local researcher Anton Gnirs undertook the first investigations into the localization of the now legendary church . However, his research in various map series was unsuccessful.

After major wind breaks in the 1980s and 1990s, remains of the wall finally came to light. The archaeological investigations carried out between 2002 and 2006 enabled them to be identified as the walls of a church. Parts of the walls were rebuilt.

The nave had a length of 14.8 m and a width of 12.8 m. The church was surrounded by walls 1.15 m thick. During the excavations, two human skeletons and coins that date back to the reign of Johann von Luxemburg were found.

The area of ​​the desert church has been used for performances of the Nicholas legend since 2005.
