The St. Olaf Lutheran Church is an Evangelical Lutheran pioneer church in Carbon County in the US state of Montana . It is located 35 km northwest of the village of Red Lodge, free-standing on the hilly foreshore of the Beartooth Mountains .

history

On April 8, 1904, Lutheran farmers who no longer wanted to walk the arduous journey to the divine service in Absorakee founded their own parish , which they called St. Olaf Congregation . In doing so, they took up a reference back to the faith of their home country, as the founding families had immigrated exclusively from Norway . The pastor of Absorakee, Jorgen Elius Madson, initially held services in private homes and school buildings.

After enough money had been collected, the construction of their own church began, which was completed in 1921. The building received eight Billings stained glass windows . It was built in a location that the families on the farms in two valleys could best reach, at the intersection of Red Lodge Creek and Volney Creek. Pastor Madson was the first of 15 Lutheran ministers in St. Olaf. He is buried in the cemetery next to the church, which is still in use today. The church itself is only used for special services and no longer belongs to an independent parish.
