Ev. St. Oswald Church

The listed Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Oswald is located in the Zeilfeld district of the small town of Römhild in the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia .

The church was built in the pre-Reformation period. She owns the remains of a fortification . A defensive wall with loopholes and appropriately designed windows confirm this structurally. Most of the time, the faithful and villagers sought protection in the forests when there was danger, it is reported.

The steeple is Gothic origin and has in the basement of the cross-vaulted and provided with a keystone sanctuary . Opposite the tower, the nave , built in 1734, appears small. The previous buildings mostly fell victim to warlike events. In the church, the galleries rest on powerful carved pillars . The baroque organ from 1767, made by Johann Christian Dotzauer , has largely been preserved in its original form. In 2013 it was extensively restored by the Rösel & Hercher Orgelbau company .

From 1984 to 1985, 32 late medieval frescoes were found in the chancel. They lasted for centuries. Experts estimate that the frescoes were created between 1480 and 1520.
