The Basilica of Saint Pancratius is a Roman Catholic parish church in the center of Tubbergen in the Netherlands . The neo-Gothic church from 1897 was elevated to a minor basilica in 2000 .

Predecessor church

There was traditionally a chapel dedicated to St. Pancras in Tubbergen, which belonged to the parish in Ootmarsum . This chapel was enlarged and from 1576 by parish of Ootmarsum to the local parish church. In 1634 a minister was appointed in Tubbergen. Despite the largely Catholic population, the church was handed over to Protestant hands. When Louis Bonaparte , King of Holland, learned in 1809 that there were only 68 Protestants for every thousands of Catholics in Tubbergen, he ordered the return.

After insufficient maintenance by the small Protestant community, the church was extensively renovated from 1826 to 1828. The damaged Gothic tower from the 16th century made of Bentheim sandstone was shortened in 1842 after storm damage. In 1881 an organ from the Utrecht company Maarschalkerweerd was built and is still in use today.

The new church

After planning began in 1893, the decaying church was demolished three years later and the new building was built in 1897 according to plans by the architect Alfred Tepe . The rest of the tower was retained. The church was solemnly consecrated on June 30, 1897 in the presence of Archbishop Andreas Ignatius Schaepman from Tubbergen . The central nave is flanked by two equally high, but narrower side aisles. There is a chapel on each side of the tower.

In 1977 and 1978 the tower was restored and brought back to its original height, including two new bells. Nowadays, the transition is clearly recognizable from the color transition of the differently weathered stones. In 1996 the old organ was supplemented by a choir organ from the same manufacturer from 1882.

Church and tower are protected as a Rijksmonument .

Furnishing

In addition to the architect and the organ builder, there were also other people involved in the church furnishings of the St. Bernulphus guild, which have been preserved to this day . The pulpit and the altar were created by Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg . The 35 stained glass windows, which were designed and manufactured by five successive generations of the famous Nicolas glazing family, are considered outstanding.
