The Protestant village church of St. Pankratius is a stately post-Gothic hall church in the Bendeleben district of the Kyffhäuserland community in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia . It belongs to the parish of Bendeleben in the parish Kyffhäuserland of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany and is known for its leaning tower and the lavish early baroque furnishings.

History and architecture

The church was built in 1588 on the foundations of a previous building in red sandstone and renovated in 1815 after a lightning strike. Interior renovations were carried out in 1861, 1906–1908 and 1967–1972. The building has a five-storey west tower with a retracted bell storey and a curved dome, which was completed in 1623 and changed in 1725. It is clearly recognizable that it has deviated more than a meter to the west.

The interior of the church is illuminated by round and pointed arched windows, some of which are tracery ; the tracery was partially renewed. The ship, which is closed on three sides, is closed by a gable roof with a ridge turret. In 1907 a burial chapel was added on the north side and a stair tower on the south side. The interior is completed by a wooden barrel vault with remains of painting from the construction period. The room is surrounded by a three-sided gallery, which is painted on the parapet with scenes from the New Testament from around 1600, which were painted over in 1861 and fitted into an oval frame. On the south side of the chancel there is a box with rich figurative and ornamental decorations, the depictions of the Last Judgment and four pictures from the Old Testament, which are dated 1674.

Furnishing

Today's altarpiece was created from a former epitaph for Jacob and Brigitte von Bendeleben († 1590), which was painted over in 1861. The middle relief shows the Lord's Supper , above it the resurrection. The donor and angel figures were stolen in 1990. The richly carved pulpit is a work from 1611. The basket rests on a figure of Moses , the trinity and apostles are depicted on the sound cover . The font from 1614 shows scenes from the New Testament and was painted over in 1841.

The epitaph of the Lords of Bendeleben from 1661 stands in front of the entrance to the burial chapel attached to the north. The structure, which is unusually richly decorated with cartilage and fittings, shows over 60 coats of arms. The entrance is flanked by moving angel figures, above which are reliefs depicting the crucifixion and resurrection.

An epitaph of the Faschius family from 1660 shows the resurrection of Christ. Gravestones for Christoph von Bendeleben, Hermann von Bendeleben († 1599), Wolf Caspari († 1640), Nicolaus Caspari († 1609) and a tombstone of Johannes Clajus († 1592) are attached to the choir walls . Numerous other gravestones by those of Bendeleben from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century can be found in the burial chapel.

Two oil paintings on the gallery from the middle of the 17th century show the crucifixion and the resurrection. A bell from 1323 is kept in the tower hall.

The organ is the work of an unknown organ builder from 1660 with 22 stops on two manuals and a pedal . The organ was damaged when lightning struck in 1811, but it was restored and the disposition was changed. In 1860 the disposition was changed again.
