The parish church of St. Paul is the Roman Catholic Church in the district Mitterau in Krems .

history

The diocese of St. Poelten , built 1963 to 1968, a time known as Church teaching academy in the district Mitterau ; Today it is - as the Krems-Mitterau campus - one of the locations of the Kirchliche Pädagogische Hochschule Wien / Krems . In the house chapel of the academy, the parish of St. Veit began with church services and on January 1st, 1974, the parish of St. Paul was established. In the 1976 architectural competition for the church and parish center, the architect Josef Patzelt received1st prize and was also commissioned to execute it. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in February 1977, the foundation stone was laid on June 25, 1977 by Alois Stöger , the topping-out ceremony with the completion of the shell was on June 15, 1978. In the competition for the artistic design of the church, the jury could not decide on any artist , was subsequently commissioned by Günter Wolfsberger. On September 21, 1980, the church was consecrated by Bishop Franz Zak and the parish center opened.

Church and parish center

The main church space is centered on the round main altar, with the benches arranged in a semicircle. The singing gallery is arranged in such a way that the choir remains visible as part of the community. The main church area is made of unplastered masonry, bitter concrete and natural wood. The church vestibule is large and also serves as the vestibule for the meeting hall of the parish center. The weekday church, usually closed off from the main church room with a mobile wall, and open to the main altar, was originally intended to be at floor level with a difference in height. Because the building site turned out to be a former garbage dump, the height difference was abandoned for reasons of cost. The bell pillar was also put back for cost reasons and only the foundation was built. The sacristy and the altar boy are already part of the parish center, which with most of the rooms was arranged around an inner courtyard and contains a pastor's apartment and a chaplain 's apartment.

On the altar wall was an early baroque crucifix on loan from 1978 to 2008 , a carving from the branch church in St. Johann im Mauerthale . The circular altar made of sandstone was designed by Josef Patzelt. Günter Wolfsberger designed the tabernacle and ambo, they rest on bronze pillars with a cruciform cross-section, the bronze baptismal font has an ascending column in the middle that carries the Easter candle, the door handles of the portals show Christian symbols such as fish and bread, chalice and divine eye. The weekday chapel contains a Madonna with child , where the development and origin is assumed to be around 1720 in South Tyrol. The vestibule contains a statue of Paul, which the local wine maker Harald Hagen created based on a statue of Paul from the 16th century, which is in the Krems museum. The Eucharistic vessels, chalice and host bowl and monstrance, custody and two cibories were created by Michael Peschta from Vienna, a graduate of Professor Franz Hagenauer's master class for metal design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

The organ has 1296 pipes in 20 registers on 2 manuals and pedal and was built by Gregor Hradetzky from Krems an der Donau, whereby the placement of the organ offers the player optimal contact with the liturgical events. In 1995 a church tower was erected on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the city of Krems and a bell was cast in the open air by the Grassmayr bell foundry from Innsbruck on the parish square of St. Veit . In 2005 the bell tower was reinforced and a second bell was added.
