Geographical location

Rossatz-Arnsdorf is located on the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the market town covers 39.04 square kilometers. 78.6 percent of the area is forested.

history

Prehistory and Antiquity

Archaeological finds such as stool graves , stone axes and ceramics bear witness to a settlement as early as the Stone Age (up to around 2500 BC) . A Celtic grave was also found from the younger Iron Age (4th century BC) .

During Roman times , the area belonged to the province of Noricum . The border of the empire ran along the Danube. Two watchtowers of the Limes from the 3rd century are documented, the remains of which were restored by employees of the Federal Monuments Office - one in Bacharnsdorf ( Burgus Bacharnsdorf ) (left the picture) and one in Rossatzbach (see Burgus Bacharnsdorf); Celto-Roman burial mounds ("seven graves") were found from the 1st century.

Middle Ages and Modern Times

Rossatz

In the 7th and 8th centuries there was a Slavic settlement on the steep slope to the Danube. In addition to archaeological finds, place and field names with Slavic roots still remind us today.

At the beginning of the 9th century, Emperor Charlemagne donated the area to the Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael in Metten . The first written mention as "Rosseza" dates from around 985.

From the 11th century the place was owned by the Babenbergs and was expanded according to plan until the 13th century. A judge is mentioned in a document in 1258. As a result, various spiritual and secular manors had property in Rossatz. The Subenhof used as an inn is still reminiscent of an estate belonging to the Suben Abbey .

In the 15th century, Emperor Friedrich III. Rossatz the market law.

From the 16th century until around 1630 Rossatz was Protestant .

From the 15th century onwards, the place had frequently changing noble owners, e.g. B. the Wallseer , the Spaur and Kirchberger families and the Geymann von Gallspach ; In 1768 it was united with the Mautern rule of the Counts Schönborn-Puchheim .

There are documentary evidence of viticulture in the area since around 1170 . After purchasing the formerly manorial land after the hereditary subordination was lifted in 1848, the Rossatzers founded the forest and estate cooperative (now an agricultural community ) in 1859 .

In 1626 and 1886 Rossatz was devastated by fires.

In 1971/72 the municipalities of Mitter- and Oberarnsdorf were incorporated.

Bach-, Ober- and Mitterarnsdorf were owned by the Archdiocese of Salzburg from 860 to 1803/06 .

Rührsdorf

The area of ​​Rührsdorf was owned by the Diocese of Passau from 823 and from 1732 to 1848 by the Counts Schönborn-Puchheim. The first written mention of the place, in which various monasteries owned vineyards, comes from 1083.

Religions

According to the census of May 15, 2011, 91.1% of the population were Roman Catholic , 2.2% Protestant and 2.5% Muslim . Other confessions accounted for less than 1%. 2.9% were without religious belief.

• Parish church hl. Jakob d. Ä. in Rossatz: A sacred building with a three-aisled basilica nave , the core of which is late Romanesque (1st quarter of the 14th century) and a mighty, prominent Gothic west tower. The towns of the market community are connected to one another via Aggsteiner Strasse on the right bank of the Danube, as well as to Krems an der Donau and Melk . The Spitz – Arnsdorf roller ferry and the Weißenkirchen – St. Lorenz establish the connection to the left bank of the Danube in the warmer months.

Established businesses

There were 39 non-agricultural workplaces in 2001, and there were 127 agricultural and forestry holdings according to the 1999 survey. The number of people in work at home was 493 according to the 2001 census. In 2001, the activity rate was 42.35 percent.

Rossatz-Arnsdorf is the largest apricot- growing community in Austria and an important wine-growing community in the Wachau wine-growing region south of the Danube.

Rupertiwinzer: In memory of the 1000-year association (approx. 800–1803) between the World Heritage Sites Arnsdorf in der Wachau and Salzburg, which began with a donation from Emperor Charles to the then Archbishop Arno , and on the occasion of the 200th return of the secularization of the Prince Archbishopric of Salzburg In 1803, ten wine growers from Arnsdorf formed the "Ruperti winemakers" in January 2003. The name is based on St. Rupert (memorial day September 24th), who is also the patron saint of the parish church Hofarnsdorf and was 1st Bishop of Iuvavum (Salzburg). They appear together at presentations and tastings to make the Arnsdorf wine better known.
