The St. Peter Church is a three-aisled basilica consecrated to St. Peter , which was built from 1916 in the village of Alstaden an der Ruhr , a district of the Ruhr area town of Oberhausen . Since April 22nd, 2007 the Peterskirche is one of four churches of the large parish Herz Jesu Oberhausen and the branch church of the parish of St. Antonius Alstaden . It will be closed within the next few years in the course of the parish development process of the parish Herz Jesu.

The well-known gospel choir S (w) ing and Praise St. Peter Alstaden, founded in 1995, is based at the Church of St. Peter .

The Peterskirche is located in the north of Alstadt on Peterplatz, named after it, in front of a green area and surrounded by other buildings belonging to the community. Her address is Peterplatz 5.

History of the parish

prehistory

Alstaden was one of the last areas in the Ruhr area to be Christianized . For a long time there were many ecclesiastical properties in the village, but never had its own church because it did not belong to the surrounding monasteries ( Essen Abbey , Werden Abbey ). The closest churches were the Petrikirche in Mülheim and, for the residents of Heiderhöfen, those in Meiderich. Around 1591 the Reformation took hold in the Broich rulership , to which Alstaden also belonged. Since then, Alstaden has been predominantly Protestant.

Part of the parishes of St. Marien and St. Joseph

Since 1763 the village belonged to the rebuilt parish of St. Marien Mülheim, whose church was still at Styrum Castle. Initially the Catholic population was low: in 1809 there were 12 Catholics, their number increased to 874 by 1864. Since 1821, all villages south of the Emscher belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne . The way to the Styrum parish church remained long. In 1862 the Alstadener Heide in the north from Alstadener Strasse was separated from the municipality of Alstaden and assigned to the newly founded mayor's office in Oberhausen. For the growing communities in Alstaden, Unterstyrum , Unterdümpten and in the south of this new mayor's office in Oberhausen - that means also in the Alstadener Heide - an emergency church was built in Unterstyrum in 1864, which was run as the rectorate of St. Mariae Birth in Mülheim and a little later a large new building was replaced, which from then on served as the main church of the newly created parish of St. Joseph Styrum . In order to shorten the way for the residents in the northern part of the parish, the emergency church Herz Jesu was inaugurated on October 3rd, 1889 on the market square in Oberhausen. Ten days later, the parish of St. Joseph was separated from the parish of St. Mary's Birth and made its own parish.

Part of the parish of the Sacred Heart

At the same time, the north of the parish of St. Joseph, Oberhausen and Alstaden-Heide, was established as the parish of the Heart of Jesus. On October 26th, August Hortmanns was introduced to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as rector. Soon the congregation of the Sacred Heart was committed to being elevated to a parish. The main opponent was Pastor Heyden from Styrum. Although he was transferred, his successor also spoke out against the parish elevation. An attempt was made to circumvent the parish of St. Joseph with a letter to the vicariate general of the Archdiocese of Cologne, which actually succeeded: against the will of the pastor of St. Joseph, Archbishop Philipp Krementz elevated Herz Jesu to the parish of August Hortmanns on October 20, 1892 was appointed first pastor. From 1909 to 1911 the real parish church of the Heart of Jesus was built on the site of the emergency church .

Beginnings of the parish

The parish Herz Jesu was also divided into three parishes: in addition to the parish Herz Jesu and the parish St Johannes, which had already been raised to a parish in 1906, there was the western district in the Alstadener Heide, known as the Heidebezirk . In 1909 the church building association St. Petri was founded in the heather district . Pastor Jacquorie von Herz Jesu procured a plot of land to build the church and from 1916 to 1918 the church was built in the Heidebezirk under Pastor Loebbels, which was consecrated in 1918 by Auxiliary Bishop Lausberg as St. Petri Heide . Ferdinand Koenen became chaplain and rector at St. Petri. The church choir was founded in 1919. By 1920 the number of Catholics in the new branch parish increased so much that Archbishop Schulte elevated the Rectorate of St. Petri Heide to a separate parish with the name of St. Peter Alstaden on May 20, 1920 . On May 31 of the same year Franz Krüger was introduced as the first pastor to St. Peter.

1920 to 2007: Parish of St. Peter

The little monastery

In 1922 the rectory and the "little room" were built right next to the church. In 1924 nuns of the poor sisters of St. Francis moved into the old rectory on Broicher Straße , which is why it was converted into a monastery. In addition, an old people's home and a large kindergarten were built. During the Second World War, the parish buildings suffered little damage. It was decided in 1954 to build a youth home. In 1958, St. Peter and the entire dean's office in Oberhausen were assigned to the newly founded Ruhr Diocese of Essen . In 1969 the nuns were called back from the mother house in St. Peter and left the parish. The monastery was converted into a residential building and still exists today with the bell tower, it is colloquially called the Small Monastery . Since then, the youth home has also served as a parish home. Since 1972 the church has been home to the Polish and Italian congregations in Oberhausen.

Since 2007: Parish Herz Jesu, parish St. Antonius

At the beginning of 2007, Pastor Marko Bralic also took care of the Alstaden neighboring parish of St. Antonius of Padua . On April 22nd of the same year, the new parish Herz Jesu Oberhausen was founded in a solemn pontifical ministry , which consists of the former parishes Herz Jesu, St. Joseph Styrum, St. Antonius Alstaden and St. Peter Alstaden. The two Alstaden parishes were combined to form the parish (colloquially "parish") of St. Antonius Alstaden, and St. Peter has been a branch church of St. Antonius since then.

The parish office is, however, located next to the Peterskirche at Peterplatz 5, in addition there is a second center of the community with the parish and youth home St. Peter, the rooms of the KAB and the kindergarten St. Peter. However, the youth home is now run by the Alt-St. Peter eV worn. It has been known since October 2017 that the Church of St. Peter and the associated buildings will have to be closed within the next few years in favor of the more centrally located Alstaden main church St. Antonius.

The large parish of St. Antonius has around 7,640 members, making it one of the largest parishes in the entire diocese.

Architecture and interior design

Peterskirche was built from 1916 to 1918. It is a three-aisled, plastered basilica, with two transepts in the east of the long sides giving the impression of a building on a cross-shaped floor plan. The transverse rectangular choir ends in a semicircular east apse made of red brick. In the west there are two slender towers with a conical roof: St. Peter and the large Marienkirche are the only two churches in Oberhausen with twin towers.

In the upper part there are four-pass- shaped windows, while those in the lower part are designed with round arches with keystones . Inside there are light walls and dividing elements. The windows in the choir apse and in the side aisles were designed by Prelate Johannes Geulen.

In the north tower of the church is the only bell of St. Peter's Church, the St. John's bell, cast in Gescher and consecrated in 1971 (inscription: “Prepare the way for the Lord”).
