St. Peter is the Roman Catholic parish church in the Heidelberg district of Kirchheim . It was built in the neo-Romanesque style between 1908 and 1909 and is dedicated to the apostle Peter .

history

The village of Kirchheim, which was independent until 1920, has been Protestant since the Reformation . The old village church after its destruction in the Nine Years War newly built Peter Church , was used by the Protestant community.

With the arrival of Catholics (a Catholic schoolhouse was built in 1830) the desire for a Catholic church in Kirchheim arose. In 1888, for the first time since 1562, a Catholic mass was celebrated in the Catholic schoolhouse. Two decades later a new Catholic church was built. This was designed by the head of the Archbishop's Building Office, Ludwig Maier , who was already responsible for the planning of St. Bonifatius in the Weststadt and St. Raphael in Neuenheim in Heidelberg . The church was built between 1908 and 1909, but was not consecrated until 1914. She took over the patronage of the old Petruskirche, which reminds of the former affiliation to the diocese of Worms . In 1963/64 the church was fundamentally redesigned and extensively renovated in 2006/07.

Since 1942 St. Peter was an independent parish. Since January 1, 2015, the parish is no longer legally independent, but part of the Heidelberg City Church. The head of the town church is Pastor Dr. Joachim duration, deputy Head Rev. Johannes Brandt.

description

Like the other new Heidelberg buildings in Maier, St. Peter is designed in the neo-Romanesque style, which here is based on Rhenish models. For urban planning reasons, the church faces north. It is a three-aisled, flat-roofed basilica without a transept with a semicircular apse. The striking tower with a pointed helmet is attached to the side of the choir. The facade and the remaining outer walls are structured with pilaster strips and arched friezes. The massive round pillars inside end with cube capitals .

Inside, only the flat ceiling painted by Anton Glassen remains from the time it was built. It shows the apostles Peter and Paul and the symbols of the four evangelists. The original neo-Romanesque furnishings were removed during the redesign in 1963/64. The altar, tabernacle, ambo and way of the cross are modern, the glass windows were designed by Herbert Kämper. In the left aisle there is a baroque Madonna.
